Before trying this tea I did not care for green tea. This is now my everyday go to tea! When I start getting low I order more.

Camellia Sinensis (Green Leaves)

Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center Pvt. Ltd. (KTERC). KTERC is the first certified organic tea garden in Nepal. It was established in 1984 by Mr. Deepak Prakash Baskota to rid his community of poverty. It remains a model social enterprise still today, that runs on cooperative infrastructure and is truly focused on the people and planet before profit.

Kanchanjangha Verde’s production process very much resembles the process of a classic loose leaf green tea in the Darjeeling Hills. Our first tea makers in the early 90s were from Darjeeling who helped us perfect this method of production. The carefully hand-plucked tea leaves are brought into the factory and allowed to sit for a very brief time before being directly heated through the dryer. This is a crucial step to halt any oxidation process that might occur. The half-dried teas are then transferred to a rolling machine that initially breaks the cell walls of these leaves allowing them to release essential oils. Unlike other general green teas, rolled teas are allowed to rest for a while before finally re-drying when the tea is at the peak of its aroma. The teas are then broken down through a crushing process and sorted through three different machines. This helps in only gathering the finer parts of the tea leaves and sorting out the stems, and flakey leaves and also grades them according to sizes. Finally, it is hand-sorted and multiple grades of the same teas are created.

Our tea garden is nestled in the foothills of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, in the eastern part of Nepal. Located precisely near the western borders of Darjeeling, India and north of the Illam, the most famous tea-growing region in Nepal, our small village enjoys the best of both worlds. Situated at an altitude of 1300-1800 meters (4,200 - 6000 feet), the area enjoys pristine Himalayan climatic conditions to produce highly unique and aromatic teas.

This organic green tea is the perfect start for anyone new to loose leaf green tea. It is a mellow and smooth brew that gives away sweet fruity and vegetal notes. Furthermore, unlike other green teas in general, this loose leaf green tea can withstand a slightly higher temperature because its production process is quite thorough and involves a bit of oxidation. People who love Japanese sencha and other roasted green teas will most likely enjoy this loose leaf green tea.
